I recently had the pleasure of working with a Texas based interior designer and entrepreneur, Christina Atkinson of Simple Goods Shop. In addition, I have expanded my services to include Oahu interior design photography for historic homes. For my whole life, homes and industrial design has always been a love of mine. This chance to photograph this historic home in the Diamond Head neighborhood in Honolulu was a dream come true. It is open with fantastic natural light pouring in from all sides. Because of this natural charm, Christina accented the clean lines and white walls with modern, industrial and textural accents. She had spent the few day prior to this shoot sourcing a plethora of items found locally in boutique shops. From Kakaako to Kailua, I think she found some really cool finds which just goes to show that our local economy is booming with creatives, artists and business owners with fantastic taste in design.
Christina and I walked through the home and she pointed out areas of interest, what items she personally loved most and what her overall brand aesthetic is. This helped me to preplan the angles that worked best, and how I was to edit these images to align with her modern, clean vibe. Particularly, I loved the large wall of windows and french doors. This broad light source is ideal for the light and airy look. I utilized all natural light, meaning I did not use any flash photography. This is the best method if you want to capture a similar look. With that said, nothing beats natural light. It poured in from 3 primary directions. For instance, to the left, right and behind the patio arched doorways. With some multiple exposures, I was able to blend them seamlessly in photoshop to create a cohesive natural look.
